Writer / Director / Producer - Gregg Helvey
GREGG HELVEY is an internationally award-winning director. He graduated from University of Virginia (2001) with degrees in English and French. Before enrolling in USC's graduate filmmaking program he taught French and Photography at a boarding school in England for three years. This experience afforded him various travel and work opportunities from camel treks through the Sinai Peninsula to documenting Peace Corps water projects in El Salvador. His filmmaking experiences range from documentaries about solar rickshaws in India and orphanages in China to fictional films in Kenya and England. Gregg was one of three students chosen to direct a USC financed thesis documentary called "Overexposed." It examines how sexualized mass media and pornography affect men's abilities to be intimate. Dr. Drew, Adam Carolla and other cultural pundits comment on the issue while we follow two men trying to navigate the rocky road of love, sex and relationships in an age of virtual fantasies. It recently won best short documentary at the 2007 Bombay International Ficts Festival.
Gregg's interest in social justice issues arose from volunteer work at a non-profit dealing with human trafficking in the Eastern European sex trade. His love of travel, combined with a deep desire to expose injustice has put him on a track of overseas filmmaking that enriches American audiences while expanding their horizons.
